Dat Phuong holds closure ceremony for Thon 3 Bridge in Quang Nam Province

11/01/2023Construction
On January 11, 2023, a closure ceremony for the Thon 3 Bridge was officially held in Dien Ban commune. The event was attended by Mr. Nguyen Hong Quang, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Nam Province, and Mr. Nguyen Xuan Ha, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Dien Ban town, along with representatives from the project management board and construction units.

The Thon 3 Bridge spans the Co Co River and is part of an environmental and urban infrastructure development project aimed at addressing climate change in Hoi An City, Quang Nam Province. It is located on Dung Si Street in Dien Ngoc and connects to the Viem Dong beach area, with a total construction value exceeding VND 274 billion.

The First Bridge with "V"-Shaped Inclined Main Arch

This is the first steel arch bridge built in Quang Nam Province and the first in Vietnam to feature a main arch inclined at an angle of 10º52' without the use of cross-linking systems. The two arches curve outward, resembling the image of a flying crane, which creates a unique architectural symbol. The design of the bridge won an award in the architectural design competition for bridges over the Co Co River, organized by the People's Committee of Dien Ban Town.

The main steel arch spans 99 meters and weighs over 1.000 tons, consisting of 26 trapezoidal box core arch segments. The load-bearing arch and girder structures are integrated through a suspension cable system, featuring 38 cable bundles arranged on two arch planes, allowing vehicles to pass through the middle.

To manage the large-scale components during the construction of the steel arch, a 400-ton specialized crane and nearly 1.500 tons of steel were used as a scaffolding system. The installation and lifting of four AR1 arch segments, each measuring 14 meters in length, 2,25 meters in width, and weighing 61 tons, presented significant challenges. These components were manufactured in Dong Anh, Hanoi, and transported to the site using specialized vehicles. Notably, the final closure segment of the arch was lifted to a height of over 32 meters.

Successful on-site installation of 26 arch segments with a precision margin of only 2mm

This project, characterized by meticulous planning and an architectural design chosen through a competitive selection process, saw the construction team striving to uphold high standards, ensuring aesthetic appeal and precise execution down to the smallest details.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung, the Director of Project Management Unit 1 and head of the construction team, reported that the team successfully assembled the steel arch spans from 26 segments. “While fabricating the segments at the factory with high precision was already challenging, assembling them on-site with a precision margin of only 2 mm proved to be even more demanding. X-ray, ultrasonic, and magnetic testing of the on-site welds confirmed compliance with quality standards,” Mr. Dung stated.
